Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Recovery

A registered physiotherapist comes to you — assesses, treats, and builds a structured strength and mobility plan around your recovery goals. Right after surgery, when travel is hardest, care comes to you.

Recovering From Knee Replacement, In the Comfort of Your Home

The first few weeks after a total knee replacement (TKR) are exactly when getting to a clinic is hardest — and those are often exactly the people who need physiotherapy most. After a knee or hip replacement. Recovering from a stroke. An elderly parent who’s had a fall and lost confidence on the stairs. Someone managing Parkinson’s, or long-term back pain that a desk job keeps feeding.

For all of these, treatment that happens in your own space isn’t a compromise — it’s usually better, because we train your body on the actual environment you live in. Every physiotherapist is BPT/MPT qualified and verified before their first visit, and wherever possible you’ll see the same clinician each time.

What to Expect :

Every physiotherapist we send is registered (BPT/MPT), experienced in post-surgical orthopaedic rehab, and credential-checked before they ever visit your home — so you always know exactly who’s coming through the door, and what to expect from the visit.

Who This Guide Is For

This page is for patients recovering from total knee replacement (TKR) surgery in Delhi NCR, and for family members arranging their aftercare. It covers what physiotherapy at home typically involves in the first 12 weeks after surgery — always follow your own surgeon’s specific instructions, since recovery timelines vary by patient and procedure.

Recovery Timeline After Knee Replacement

Days 1–3 (hospital/early home): Focus is on pain control, ankle pumps, and gentle knee bends. Most patients begin walking short distances with a walker within 24–48 hours of surgery.

Week 1–2: A home physiotherapist typically visits 3–5 times a week. Goals include reducing swelling, reaching roughly 90 degrees of knee flexion, and building enough quadriceps strength to manage stairs with support.

Week 3–6: Sessions usually reduce to 2–3 times a week. Most patients progress from a walker to a cane, and flexion targets increase toward 110–120 degrees. Strengthening work expands to include balance and gait retraining.

Week 6–12: Many patients return to most daily activities and, with surgeon clearance, driving. Physiotherapy shifts toward higher-level strengthening, stair management, and a longer-term home exercise program.

3–6 months: Full recovery of strength and confidence in walking is typical by this stage for most patients, though this varies by age, pre-surgery fitness, and any complications.
